Dubai’s silk fabric can withstand water loss in the desert and it is the result of a research project by the Dubai Institute of Technology.
Dubai has one of the largest desert regions in the world.
The area contains a vast amount of desert sand, which can take on the water content of the water table.
When the water level drops, the sand becomes more waterlogged, so it is impossible to produce the fabric.
However, the research showed that the fabric was resistant to the effect of water loss and this was the result from an unusual type of bacteria, called E. coli.
This bacterial group, known as Klebsiella bacteria, lives in the soil and produces hydrogen peroxide which is a powerful disinfectant.
The researchers found that a strain of E. coli in the fabric caused the fabric to degrade more quickly and that it could be used to treat the fabrics.
This is an important discovery because it suggests that fabric may be more resilient than people have realised, and that the environment is being affected more than people realise.
It is also important because the fabric can be used in a wide variety of applications, from medical devices to clothes.
“Our research suggests that the quality of the fabric is important, because it will help in the treatment of water-logged materials, for example, to reduce the weight of the fabrics,” said Alaa Nasser, a postdoctoral researcher at the institute.
“The fabric could be made in an eco-friendly way and made into a durable and comfortable garment, and be used for all kinds of applications.”
The team also found that the cotton fabric can resist dehydration, which is common in the arid areas of the Arabian Peninsula.
The fabric was also able to withstand the loss of moisture from rain and snow.
“We also found a number of advantages of the cotton in this field,” said Nasser.
“For example, it is very resilient to the effects of temperature fluctuations, and it can withstand very high humidity, which will reduce the chances of water contamination.”
The fabric is not yet suitable for everyday use because it has to be soaked in water before being used, but the research also found the cotton to be very water resistant.
“In the future, it could make use of different fabrics, which would provide even more protection,” Nasser added.
This research was funded by the Government of Dubai.
The research was conducted by scientists at the Dubai Engineering Institute.
