An Indian silk and wool company is offering to donate a portion of its profits to charities, but has not yet decided what it will do with the surplus silk, a major source of income for the industry.
The Silk Group, a private company with offices in Bengaluru, has been selling silk in markets in India since 2006.
The silk is made from the hair of goats, and is sold for up to 15 times the price of other kinds of silk.
It has been exported to a number of countries including the US, the UK, Canada and the Netherlands.
“We have received orders for a lot of the silk, and are working to collect as much as possible,” Silk Group president Amit Agarwal told Al Jazeera.
“If we find surplus silk in our country, we will be donating it to a charity, but there is no guarantee.
We need a clear commitment from the government to help us.”
Agarwal said the company was currently working on an initiative to collect the silk and use it to create a clothing line.
“Agarwal said that this will be a new kind of business, but he added that the company would work with NGOs and charities to find a way to save the silk,” Al Jazeera’s Anupama Das reported.
