China is buying 40 tonnes worth of Chinese silk fabrics, including those made from cotton, from Vietnam, a top official said on Friday.
China has been buying a steady flow of Chinese cotton and silk fabric since the fall of the Berlin Wall and has been exporting the products to Vietnam for decades.
“In the first two years, the number of imports and exports of silk was approximately 20 tonnes, and in the following two years it has increased by 60 tonnes,” the official said.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that in order to ensure that China could meet the demand for the fabrics, the Vietnam Government is also working to increase its exports to the country.
“The number of exports to China from Vietnam is currently about 40 tonnes, which is enough to meet the needs of China’s growing domestic textile industry,” the source said.
According to the official, China’s textile exports to Vietnam amounted to around $3.4bn in the first half of this year.
This is the third time in three years that China has exported silk fabrics to Vietnam, and it is not the first time that the Chinese authorities have used its influence to gain a competitive edge in the Chinese textile market.
In April, the China-Vietnam trade relationship became a source of diplomatic tension between Beijing and Washington when President Xi Jinping reportedly ordered a halt to the US$30bn Vietnam-China free trade deal.
